Most fires can be prevented, and the right preparation saves lives when they can’t. Start with the basics below, then ask us for a free home safety visit.
Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms
- Put a smoke alarm in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level.
- Test alarms once a month and replace any alarm that is 10 years old.
- Washington law requires carbon monoxide alarms in most homes. Put one outside sleeping areas and on each level.
Plan your escape
Draw a map of your home with two ways out of every room, pick a meeting place outside, and practice with everyone in the home twice a year.
Cooking and heating
- Stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling, or broiling.
- Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet from space heaters, fireplaces, and wood stoves.
- Plug space heaters directly into the wall, never into an extension cord.
Wildfire and outdoor burning
- Keep the 5 feet around your home clear of anything that can burn.
- Check the burn status before any outdoor fire.
- Get ready for wildfire season.
